Amboseli National Park is a gem in Kenya, renowned for its breathtaking scenery and incredible wildlife viewing opportunities. The name “Amboseli” comes from a Maasai word meaning “salty dust”, referencing the dried-up bed of Lake Amboseli that dominates the park’s center. Despite the lack of permanent water, the park thrives due to underground springs that feed swamps crucial for the wildlife.
Amboseli is most famous for its large herds of African elephants. These magnificent creatures roam freely across the savanna, and visitors can get incredibly close during safaris. Amboseli was once home to Echo, the most researched elephant in the world, who was followed by conservationists for nearly four decades. Sadly, Echo passed away in 2009.

The park is nicknamed the “Land of Giants” not just for its elephants, but also for the variety of other wildlife that call it home. Visitors can expect to see lions, cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, buffalo, and many species of birds. Amboseli is also an Important Bird Area, meaning it provides critical habitat for endangered bird species.
